I Was a Broke Writer. Then I Changed My Story

I knew I wanted to be a writer from the age of 9. It took a while, but I eventually got there when I was 30, when I sold a six-book children’s horror series to HarperCollins.
Sounds like the big break, right?
Wrong.
I was broke. Not just "tightening the belt" kind of broke, but "how will I pay next month's rent?" broke.
Writing over 150 children’s books for some of the biggest publishers in the world, major awards on my shelf, and film & TV rights picked up for my stories by production companies.
Still, my wallet and bank account were empty.
Day in, day out, I was writing, chasing deadlines, missing out on life, and just scraping by.
Then 2016 hit like a plot twist.
I ditched the “old fashioned” way and self-published a comedy sci-fi novel, SPACE TEAM, on Amazon.
Day one? I made my first sale. It wasn't headline news, but those sales – exactly 12 a day for a week – started to add up.
We're talking about $30 a day, which might not sound like much, but it added up to an extra $900 a month.
I challenged myself to make $15,000 in a year from self-publishing. A friend and fellow author persuaded me to shoot for the moon and go for $20,000, instead.
Fast forward twelve months, and not only did I hit that, I blew past it, adding over $125,000 to my bank account in that first year.
Now, eight years in, I've sold over 3 million ebooks, half a million audiobooks, and hit the Amazon #1 spot multiple times.
And all of this snowballed from self-publishing a comedy sci-fi novel I wrote in three weeks with zero upfront costs.
